VANCOUVER - Health Canada has launched an investigation after flies and what seemed to be larvae were found in the latex medical gloves used by dentists and doctors to perform oral and internal exams like Pap tests or rectal exams.

In a statement Wednesday, Health Canada said insects and other foreign matter are a "safety concern."

"This would therefore contravene the safety and effectiveness requirements of the medical device's regulations," said the statement.

Some latex examination gloves being used by dentists and doctors across Canada contain flies, larvae and unidentified black matter, a Global B.C. investigation has revealed.

Some latex examination gloves being used by dentists and doctors across Canada contain flies, larvae and unidentified black matter, a Global B.C. investigation has revealed.

A technician in Dr. Victor Hasson's Vancouver hair replacement clinic first noticed something strange about one of the gloves imported by Calgary-based distributor, Hedy Canada .

A look through a high-powered microscope not only revealed flies with their wings still attached embedded in the gloves, but also metallic black matter.

Independent lab tests confirmed the presence of flies, matter consistent with larvae, unidentified black material and also showed there were holes in most of the nine gloves inspected.

"Any kind of medical facility will be using these gloves on a continuous basis. It's certainly nothing that anyone would like to see in a medical product," said Hasson. "This may just be the tip of the iceberg, who knows?"

Health Canada said one of their inspectors will be contacting the Calgary importer.

B.C. Health Minister George Abbott said his ministry has been advised the gloves are not licensed for surgical use.

"To that extent, I guess that's comforting," he said. "But we're looking forward to hearing from Health Canada a little bit further."

"Mattel recalls millions more toys"

US toymaker Mattel has recalled more than 18 million toys worldwide, the second such recall in two weeks.

Chinese-made Sarge die-cast toys from the Pixar film Cars have been recalled because their paint contains lead.

It has also recalled toys containing small magnets that can come loose, including Polly Pocket, Batman Magna, Doggie Daycare and One Piece playsets.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) said it had no reports of any injuries from the recalled products.

The earlier recall of 1.5 million toys was by Mattel's Fisher Price unit.

"China food safety head executed"

The former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, has been executed for corruption, the state-run Xinhua news agency reports.

He was convicted of taking 6.5m yuan ($850,000; £425,400) in bribes and of dereliction of duty at a trial in May.

The bribes were linked to sub-standard medicines, blamed for several deaths.

China has been criticised over a number of recent cases involving tainted goods, and correspondents say Zheng had become a symbol of the crisis.

Zheng had appealed against his sentence, arguing that it was "too severe" and saying he had confessed his crimes and co-operated with police.

But his appeal, heard in mid-June, was rejected shortly afterwards.

"U.S. officials order recall of tire imports from China"

Last Updated: Tuesday, June 26, 2007 | 4:31 PM ET
The Associated Press

U.S. safety officials have ordered a tiny tire importer to recall as many as 450,000 tires that it bought from a Chinese manufacturer and sold to U.S. distributors.

Foreign Tire Sales Inc., of Union , N.J. , said an unknown number of the light truck radials it imported since 2002 from Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., of Hangzhou , China , could suffer tread separation, a problem that led to the nation's largest tire recall in 2000.

FTS said an unknown number of the tires it sold were made without a safety feature, called a gum strip, which helps bind the belts of a tire to each other, the company said in a filing to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some of the tires had a gum strip about half the 0.6- millimetre width that FTS expected, it said.

"
The Great Pet Food Scandal "

How one supplier caused a huge crisis, and why it's just the tip of the iceberg
CHARLIE GILLIS AND ANNE KINGSTON | April 30, 2007 |

Sometime in the next couple of years, when the public gaze has drifted from the tainted pet food epidemic and we've all forgotten what melamine is, a judge in Ohio or California or Ontario will take up the daunting question of what a dog or cat is worth. There was considerable legal debate on this topic even before the current uproar. But if an animal's curative effect on the human heart plays any part in the calculation, the courts might start at a small house in Floral Park , N.Y. , where the wounds wrought by the poisoning epidemic will stay raw for a long time to come
